Highlights – The Exchange 3
On Thursday, we hosted another insightful session of ‘The Exchange,’ led by co-hosts Amanda Anderson and mental health consultant Mike Lawrence. This session brought together passionate members of our workplace wellbeing network, including Mental Health First Aiders, Wellbeing Champions, and workplace wellbeing leaders, to discuss practical approaches to enhancing mental health within their organisations.
Our workplace wellbeing network – ‘The Exchange’ provides a safe space for open dialogue, allowing participants to explore critical issues such as mental health and neurodiversity, remote working challenges, and the role of data in supporting wellbeing initiatives. The vibrant discussion reinforced the importance of shared learning, practical solutions, and resource-sharing to cultivate a supportive workplace culture.
Here are the key takeaways from the meeting:
- Mental Health and Neurodiversity – Participants explored the relationship between mental health and neurodiversity, emphasising the need for positive awareness, reducing stigma, and building an inclusive workplace. Creating supportive environments that recognise neurodiversity, along with using AI tools for task automation, were highlighted as valuable practices within the workplace wellbeing network.
- Remote Work and Mental Health Support – Remote work remains a significant topic, with strong emphasis on supporting employees who may feel isolated. Participants discussed initiatives such as ‘tea and talk’ sessions and online check-ins, which foster connection among remote staff. The workplace wellbeing network highlighted the value of both one-to-one support and periodic face-to-face meetings to maintain trust and engagement.
- Measuring Mental Health Initiatives – Many attendees advocated for a data-driven approach to evaluate the success of wellbeing programmes. Tracking attendance at events, monitoring sick days, and conducting employee surveys were suggested as ways to ensure that support strategies are sustainable and effective. This focus on measurable outcomes within the workplace wellbeing network reflects a commitment to informed, impactful mental health support.
- Incorporating AI Tools in Wellbeing Support – A lively discussion centred on the potential of AI tools to streamline workloads and improve productivity. Participants shared experiences with tools like Copilot for data analysis and Fireflies for automatic meeting notes, agreeing that the right AI tools, thoughtfully implemented, can benefit employees’ mental health without overwhelming them. Choosing suitable AI solutions is seen as a valuable enhancement within the workplace wellbeing network.
- Future Collaboration and Continuous Improvement – As the session wrapped up, participants were invited to share resources and suggest topics for future discussions, reinforcing a culture of continuous improvement. Ideas for future topics included ‘speak up’ campaigns, anonymous reporting systems, and quarterly focus sessions on workplace wellbeing themes.
Wellbeing Support – My Reflections
Reflecting on this session, two themes stood out: the importance of supporting neurodiverse employees and the need for structured support for remote workers.
- Supporting Neurodiversity in the Workplace – The emphasis on neurodiversity reminded me how inclusive practices can enhance organisational wellbeing. Raising awareness and providing supportive training on neurodiversity not only reduces stigma but enriches workplace culture, creating an environment where all employees feel valued. This focus is an integral part of our workplace wellbeing network and contributes to a more inclusive and adaptable workplace.
- Structured Support for Remote Workers – As remote work continues to grow, ensuring equal access to support is essential. Initiatives like virtual coffee chats and regular check-ins build connection, reduce isolation, and help remote workers feel included. Creating these structured support mechanisms within the workplace wellbeing network is vital for fostering a truly supportive culture that bridges the gap between remote and in-office staff.
