‘The Exchange’ Continues to Build a Strong Network for Workplace Wellbeing Support
Yesterday, we hosted another insightful session of ‘The Exchange,’ led by co-hosts Amanda Anderson and Mental Health Consultant Mike Lawrence. We were delighted to be joined by professionals dedicated to promoting mental health and wellbeing in their workplaces. The session was designed for Workplace Mental Health First Aiders, Mental Health Champions, Wellbeing Champions, and workplace wellbeing leaders, with a focus on practical approaches and collaboration. Giving a safe space to discuss wellbeing support in the workplace.
Our participants shared their experiences and initiatives, creating a vibrant discussion on current challenges in mental health support within the workplace. Topics ranged from addressing stress to the importance of targeted support for menopause, further highlighting the need for effective training and resources. We would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who contributed to the conversation and for fostering such an open, collaborative environment.
Here are the key takeaways from the meeting:
1. Mental Health First Aid Training and Resources – Participants discussed the availability and variety of mental health first aid training programs, such as those offered by St. John Ambulance and Mental Health First Aid England. Role-playing emerged as a critical element in training programmes, offering hands-on practice to better equip first aiders in real-life scenarios. We were also introduced to the “Hub of Hope” as a valuable resource for signposting individuals to appropriate mental health services.
2. Addressing Organisational Challenges – A member shared how increased stress is being noticed across there workplace. They talked about “lunch and learn” sessions focused on various health topics, with a particular emphasis on menopause support, especially for line managers. These initiatives highlighted the need for ongoing support and targeted interventions.
3. Role of Practice in Mental Health First Aid Meetings – A key debate emerged on the effectiveness of role-play versus theoretical discussions. The consensus was to incorporate more practice scenarios in future mental health first aid meetings. A member committed to adding this to their agenda, and others were encouraged to explore this approach within their own organisations.
4. Future Collaboration and Continuous Learning – As the session wrapped up, all participants were encouraged to take the insights and strategies discussed and implement them in their workplaces. The conversation doesn’t stop here! Attendees were invited to suggest topics for future sessions, continuing the spirit of collaborative learning and growth.
Wellbeing support – My Reflections
As I reflect, two key themes really stood out to me: menopause support and the importance of creating safe spaces for mental health conversations.
1. Menopause and Men’s Health Support for Employees
One of the most significant takeaways for me was the emphasis on supporting employees through menopause and men’s health issues. It’s an area that often doesn’t receive enough attention but has a huge impact on workplace wellbeing. I believe that organisations need to be proactive in providing targeted support. This could involve specialised training for managers so they can better understand and address the challenges associated with menopause and men’s health, alongside more flexible working policies. Raising awareness and reducing the stigma surrounding menopause and men’s health issues in the workplace will go a long way in fostering a truly inclusive environment. For me, this is an area we can all benefit from focusing on more closely.
2. Creating Safe Spaces for Mental Health Conversations
Another key reflection was around the need to establish safe spaces for open mental health discussions in the workplace. The session really highlighted how crucial it is for employees to feel they can speak about their mental health without fear of judgment. Creating these spaces requires trust, confidentiality, and a commitment to support from leadership and colleagues alike. Whether it’s through peer support groups, regular check-ins, or even informal one-to-one conversations, having these spaces is something I feel we should all prioritise to truly foster a supportive mental health culture.
