With this year’s theme, “Movement: moving more for our mental health”, the focus is on the profound impact physical activity can have on our mental wellbeing. From reducing stress and anxiety to boosting mood and cognitive function, movement plays a crucial role in maintaining a healthy mind.

In the workplace, fostering a supportive environment for mental health is essential. As employees spend a significant portion of their time at work, it’s crucial for employers to prioritise initiatives that promote mental wellbeing. So, what can workplaces do to actively participate in Mental Health Awareness Week and support their employees’ mental health journeys?

Moving for mental wellbeing in the workplace

  1. Promote Movement Breaks: Encourage employees to take regular movement breaks throughout the day. Whether it’s a quick walk around the office, stretching exercises at their desk, or a group yoga session during lunch break, incorporating movement into the workday can rejuvenate both body and mind.
  2. Organise Wellbeing Workshops: Host workshops on the link between movement and mental health to share insights on the benefits of physical activity for mental wellbeing. Providing education and resources empowers employees to prioritise their mental health.
  3. Create Walking Meetings: Instead of traditional sit down meetings, suggest walking meetings. Walking while discussing work matters not only promotes physical activity but also fosters creativity and collaboration. It’s a win-win for both productivity and mental wellness.
  4. Standing Meetings: Standing meetings not only reduce sedentary behaviour but also promote better posture and circulation. By providing standing desks or adjustable height tables in meeting rooms, employees have the option to stand rather than sit during discussions or presentations. This simple adjustment can help increase energy levels, improve focus, and contribute to overall wellbeing
  5. Implement Flexible Work Policies: Offer flexibility in work hours or remote work options to accommodate employees’ exercise routines. Recognise that everyone has different preferences and schedules when it comes to physical activity. By allowing flexibility, you empower employees to prioritise their mental health without sacrificing work commitments.
  6. Launch Challenges and Competitions: Organise friendly fitness challenges or step competitions within the workplace. Whether it’s a team-based challenge or individual goal-setting, gamifying physical activity can inspire motivation and camaraderie among employees.
  7. Provide Mental Health Resources: Ensure employees have access to mental health resources and support services. This can include Employee Assistance Programmes (EAPs) and online mental health platforms. Encourage open conversations about mental health and reduce stigma through education and awareness.
  8. Lead by Example: Leadership plays a crucial role in setting the tone for workplace culture. Encourage managers and leaders to prioritise their own mental health and lead by example. When leaders prioritise wellbeing, it sends a powerful message that mental health matters at all levels of the organisation.
  9. Display Posters with Movement Tips: Place posters around the workplace featuring tips for incorporating movement into daily routines. From simple stretching exercises to desk-friendly workouts, these visual reminders can encourage employees to stay active throughout the day. Include QR codes linking to online resources for additional guidance and inspiration. Download the official poster – Tips for moving more for your mental health – Here
