Today we continue to keep the spotlight on “Movement – moving more for our mental health” aligning with the current Mental Health Awareness Week campaign. Promoting a ‘Move More, Feel Better’ initiative is an excellent way to elevate awareness and inspire your employees to prioritise movement in their daily routines. Research consistently shows that incorporating movement into our daily routines can profoundly benefit our overall wellbeing. From reducing stress and anxiety to boosting productivity and creativity, the benefits of moving more are undeniable. In this blog post, we’ll explore why movement matters in the workplace and how you can encourage yourself and your colleagues to move more for a happier, healthier work life.

Why Movement Matters:

Regular physical activity is not just good for our bodies; it’s also crucial for our mental health. Exercise releases endorphins, which are chemicals in the brain that act as natural mood lifters, helping to alleviate stress and anxiety. Additionally, movement increases blood flow to the brain, leading to improved cognitive function and enhanced creativity. By incorporating movement into our daily routines, we can sharpen our focus, boost our energy levels, and enhance our overall sense of wellbeing.

Practical Tips for supporting Employees to Move More

  1. Take Regular Breaks: Make it a habit to take short breaks throughout the day to stretch your legs and get moving. Even a five-minute walk around the office can do wonders for your mood and productivity.
  2. Schedule Movement Breaks: Set reminders on your calendar to take movement breaks at regular intervals. Use this time to go for a walk, do some light stretching, or practice deep breathing exercises to recharge your mind and body.
  3. Incorporate Exercise Into Your Commute: If possible, consider walking or biking to work instead of driving or taking public transportation. Not only will you sneak in some extra exercise, but you’ll also start your day feeling refreshed and energised.
  4. Make Meetings Active: Instead of holding all your meetings in the conference room, consider taking them outside for a walking meeting. Not only does this encourage movement, but it also fosters creativity and collaboration.
  5. Encourage Team Activities: Organise group activities such as lunchtime walks, fitness classes, or sports tournaments to encourage camaraderie and teamwork among your colleagues.
